Deputy PM: Govt to set up manager for Northern Sea Route soon
ST PETERSBURG, Dec 5 (PRIME) -- A company responsible for the development of the Northern Sea Route will be set up soon, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said on Tuesday.
“Today we are sure that such a structure will be founded in the near future… The development of the Northern Sea Route is an ambitious global project, a project of a planetary scale, we can say,” he said.
Russia hopes the Northern Sea Route, which runs from Murmansk to the Bering Strait near Alaska, could become a mini Suez Canal, cutting sea transport times from Asia to Europe.
Rogozin said that the new version of a 190 billion ruble program to develop Russia’s Arctic zone includes the Northern Route.
State nuclear power corporation Rosatom earlier presented a bill authorizing it to supervise and control the Northern Sea Route project. The bill may be effective since January 2018.
